Camouflage

Take a minute to read through the contents of this zine which covers personal data collection, biometric data misuse, and how our activity on digital media feed into data collection.

About

  • Falling under the category of experimental and discursive design my challenge was to create a campaign addressing the themes of media consumption and biometric data.

  • This project was very experimental and involved a lot of research. In order to captivate people who pass this sign to read about the negative effects of over consuming digital media and alternative practices, I needed to create the experience. I developed the idea of taking people “off the grid” to encourage them to spend less time trapped in their phones. I wanted to created the experience and fully immerse people in this idea.

After more research, I became very interested in data collection. Not only how our data is collected through our activity in the digital media world, but also biometric data and facial recognition.

In this project I used photoshop and illustrator to design the two forms of biometric camouflage you see here. I also used a Risograph to print the zines using cmyk printing for the cover.

  • In order to educate and bring awareness to a more complex topic I created to assets for this information to live in. One, a sign that uses biometric camouflage that I designed to not only attract an audience but also serve its purpose as camouflage working against biometric systems in security cameras. Two, being a pamphlet in the form of a zine. This zine is wrapped in a different version of biometric camouflage that I designed. It’s contents bring awareness to the lack of regulations and the misuse of biometric data collection. It also covers the topic of media consumption and how these topics go hand in hand.
